Pluto

Power, endings, and the rebuild that follows.

Rules Scorpio · in Aquarius as of Jul 6, 2026

Astronomy demoted Pluto in 2006. Astrology declined to follow — not out of stubbornness, exactly, but because the tradition’s categories were never about mass. In a chart, Pluto had spent seventy years describing something specific, and a vote in Prague didn’t change what.

What it describes is the underworld portfolio: power, obsession, secrets, endings, and the rebuilding that follows them. Pluto was discovered in 1930, as depth psychology was mapping the unconscious and physics was a decade from splitting the atom, and the tradition — which reads discovery eras as part of an outer planet’s meaning — took the hint twice over. This is the planet of what’s buried, and of how much energy is stored there.

What Pluto governs

Transformation, in the demolition-and-rebuild sense rather than the makeover sense. Wherever Pluto sits in a birth chart, surfaces don’t hold: that house is a part of life where you periodically lose the structure you built and discover which parts were load-bearing. It’s also where your relationship to power lives — having it, hiding it, handing it over, or spending a decade retrieving it.

Pluto rules Scorpio, the sign that treats trust as a vault rather than a lobby. Traditionally Scorpio belonged to Mars, and the two rulerships split the sign’s method cleanly: Mars is the strike, Pluto is the patience before it. People with strong Pluto or Scorpio placements tend to know this about themselves, usually earlier than they can say it out loud.

Reading Pluto personally

Pluto’s sign is the least personal fact about it. With 12 to 31 years per sign, a Pluto sign describes a generation’s shared underworld — what an entire cohort is compelled to dig up and transform. Pluto in Scorpio (roughly 1983 to 1995) marks one such cohort; Pluto in Leo another. For the individual reading, look at the house, which requires a birth time, and at aspects to your inner planets. Pluto in an opposition to your Moon or a conjunction with your Sun is not a generational statement — it’s a private intensity, and its owners are rarely surprised to hear about it.

Run your chart and find Pluto’s house. That’s the room with the locked cabinet, and the reliable pattern is that the cabinet opens a few times per lifetime whether you have the key or not — the useful preparation is knowing which room it’s in.

The longest cycle in the chart

Pluto takes about 248 years to lap the zodiac, on an orbit eccentric enough that the per-sign pace swings from a dozen years to over thirty — between 1979 and 1999 it was actually inside Neptune’s orbit, sprinting (by its standards) through Scorpio. It retrogrades five to six months of every year, which with a mover this slow is texture rather than news.

No one lives to see a Pluto return. Nations do: the United States had its first in 2022, when transiting Pluto reached the degree of Capricorn it held in 1776 — an event astrologers had circled on the calendar for generations, on the theory that even a country eventually gets asked what its power is for. For a person, Pluto’s schedule is simpler and stranger: one partial lap, a handful of exact contacts, and the standing observation that the chart’s slowest planet is the one whose work, once done, stays done.

Pluto, asked and answered

What does Pluto represent in astrology?

Power, depth, endings, and transformation — the buried material and what happens when it surfaces. Pluto's house in a birth chart marks where life periodically demolishes a structure down to the foundation and requires you to rebuild it more honestly than before.

Does Pluto still count in astrology after being reclassified?

Yes. Astronomy demoted Pluto to dwarf planet in 2006, and astrology declined to follow — the tradition's categories are interpretive, not orbital-mechanical, and seven decades of chart work had already established what Pluto placements describe. Its size was never the point; the Moon is small too.

What sign does Pluto rule?

Scorpio, in modern astrology. Traditionally Scorpio belonged to Mars, and the pair of rulerships is a fair description of the sign: Mars supplies the will to fight, Pluto the willingness to go underground and wait. Both readings remain in working use.

How long does Pluto stay in one sign?

Anywhere from about 12 to 31 years, because its orbit is markedly eccentric — a full lap takes roughly 248 years, but the pace varies enormously. It crossed Scorpio in about a dozen years in the 1980s and 90s while temporarily inside Neptune's orbit, and takes around three decades to cross Taurus. That range is why Pluto signs define generations rather than individuals.
