Capricorn ♑︎
The Goat-Fish. The gate of return.

Catalogue note
A composite creature — goat above, fish below — that has kept its exact form longer than almost any image in human use: it appears unchanged on Babylonian boundary stones from the second millennium BC. This is the record of the Goat-Fish.
The Goat-Fish belongs to Ea, Babylonian lord of the Abzu — the deep fresh waters of wisdom beneath the world. As SUḪUR.MAŠ it is carved on kudurru boundary stones from the second millennium BC, and the carving is the constellation we still draw: a figure transmitted without alteration across more than three thousand years.
Greece supplied an escape story: Pan, surprised by the monster Typhon at the Nile’s bank, dove — the half above water becoming goat, the half below becoming fish. The ancients placed the winter solstice here and named it the Gate of the Gods, the opening through which souls ascend, opposite Cancer’s gate of descent. The southern tropic still bears the sign’s name.
Capricorn rules the long climb: structure, patience, authority earned against gravity. Its record is one canonical asset of twelve, native on Solana with an official representation on Base.
Provenance
Sacred to Ea as SUḪUR.MAŠ, the Goat-Fish; carved unchanged on kudurru boundary stones since the second millennium BC.
Fixed as one of twelve equal signs when Babylonian astronomers divide the sun’s path into the first zodiac — the frame still in use today.
Told as Pan’s dive from Typhon — goat above the water, fish below; the winter solstice set here as the Gate of the Gods.
Canonized in Ptolemy’s Almagest among the forty-eight classical constellations; carried through the Arabic observatories into medieval Europe.
Engraved in Albrecht Dürer’s celestial planispheres, the first printed star charts of the Western sky.
Minted as the official Capricorn record — one canonical SPL asset, entered in the Zodiacs.org registry.
One identity, two official representations: the native Solana origin and its bridged Base counterpart, publicly verifiable in the registry.
