The houses

The fourth house

Where you're from, and where you land.

House 4 of 12 · natural affinity Cancer

Every chart has a floor. It sits at the IC — imum coeli, “the lowest heaven” — the point the Sun crosses around local midnight, and the fourth house begins there. What lives at the bottom of a chart is what you’d expect: home, family, and the versions of you that only relatives remember.

What the fourth house covers

Home, first, in the literal sense — the apartment, the hometown, the smell of a childhood kitchen that ambushes you in someone else’s hallway. Then the family behind the home: parents, ancestry, the stories that got handed down and the ones that pointedly didn’t. Tradition assigns one parent to this house and the other to the tenth, directly overhead, and astrologers have argued about which is which for most of recorded history. In practice the fourth describes the parent who made the house feel like home — or conspicuously failed to.

The fourth is also where life ends up private. Whatever face the rest of the chart maintains in public, this house holds what’s behind it: the unguarded self, the off-duty hours, and, in the traditional reading, the way things settle late in life. The chart begins at the ascendant with an entrance; the fourth is where you stop performing one. Addresses change over a lifetime — this house doesn’t. It travels with you, which is why the fourth new apartment somehow acquires the same reading chair in the same corner as the first.

The IC and the sign on the cusp

Because the IC is calculated from the exact moment and place of birth, the fourth house needs a birth time — run a birth chart with one and it will mark the IC to the degree. The house has a natural affinity with Cancer: protective, rooted, long of memory.

The sign actually on your IC describes what “home” has to provide before you can rest. Aries there treats home as a base camp — functional, half renovated, ready for departure. Libra needs it beautiful and negotiated, with no unresolved arguments in the walls. Capricorn tends to inherit a family enterprise, literal or emotional, and spends adulthood deciding which parts to keep running.

Planets in the fourth house

The Moon is at home here, and it shows: a deep need for a den, an instinct for feeding people, moods that rise and fall with the state of the household. The Sun in the fourth makes a private person whose identity is family-fed — someone who hosts rather than attends. Saturn describes a childhood home heavy with rules and an adulthood spent building a sturdier one, sometimes brick by literal brick. Pluto points to a family history with sealed files, and often to the one person at the table who finally says the quiet thing out loud.

An empty fourth house is no verdict on your family. The sign on the IC and its ruler describe the territory well enough — and everyone comes from somewhere, planets or not.

Asked and answered

What is the IC in a birth chart?

The IC (imum coeli, 'lowest heaven') is the point at the very bottom of the chart, opposite the midheaven — roughly where the Sun sits around local midnight. It marks the cusp of the fourth house and is the chart's most private point: what lives near it tends to stay off the record.

Which parent does the fourth house represent?

Traditions disagree, and have for about two thousand years — older texts often put the father here, many modern readers put the mother. The workable answer: the fourth tends to describe the parent who defined home, and the tenth the one who represented the world. Read both houses and check against your own family.

What does the fourth house say about home?

Both the literal one and the internal one: the housing you gravitate toward, what a place must provide before you can relax in it, and the family patterns you carry into every new address. The sign on the IC and any planets in the house describe the style; your lease describes the rest.
